Individuals vary greatly. Some are intelligent, healthy and motivated. Many are not. Over thousands of years of human evolution, natural selection has ensured only those with valuable skills and abilities survive to reproduce. But does natural selection continue to change us? Chances of survival in 2016 are determined more by geographical location and lifestyle choice than the quality of your genes. Humans as a species have conquered Earth and our number exploded. Are we now the best possible organic life form? How can natural selection further change our species? In terms of life getting ever more complex, what mechanism could lead to the next level of complexity?
Natural selection hasn’t anything to work with any more. We have engineered our environment and broken the mechanism of evolution.
If natural selection chooses who lives and who dies then sexual selection determines who reproduces and who does not. In the absence of life threatening situations does the mechanism of evolution soften, from death, to permission to reproduce? As society becomes safer do we become more sexually more selective?
The birth rate is falling which does suggest that humans reproductive habits are changing. We are deciding to have fewer children. Are we being more selective with whom we are having children with? People who are intelligent, healthy and motivated are generally considered more attractive and desirable future parents.
But is this enough? What could lead to more complex life forms quicker?
There are approximately 101 males to every 100 females, what would happen if this ratio were altered?
…a new social structure would have to be implemented to ensure the individuals in the population are happy and leading a fulfilling life. If there were suddenly a one to ten ratio, either male to female or female to male, in a society were monogamous relationships are the norm the majority of the population is going to be frustrated and will be unproductive.

Some people are fearful of artificial intelligence ( I’m looking at you Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking). AI could be the new mechanism to push our species forward. AI could be a new competitor, something to reactivate natural selection. I’d fear that.
Or AI could be the start of a new category of life. Life has evolved from single cell organisms, to multi cell to complex organisms. What’s next? Could AI be the mechanism to start to link human individuals into a super complex life form? Simple cells linked up to form complex life, could humans link up to make super-complex life? Could we even comprehend that happening? Do your cells ‘know’ they are part of something complex?
